After being in the industry for a couple of years… ok 13, I can honestly say that I am not 100% happy with what I am seeing with this series.  It is obvious that they are focused solely on calls with a light hearted review of what it is like to be a paramedic.  Why is this a problem you might ask?  Well let’s open that can of worms shall we!

1.  To improve healthcare in the world today we need to approach it the same way around the world and the highlight review of responding to calls does nothing for the world to understand why we do what we do as paramedics.

2.  The more we accept these types of productions as a representation of our industry we will never begin to understand the opportunity we have to educate the public and improve public perception of why we need their help!

3.  Hollywood:  I love hollywood for all the inspiration they gave me, but they also are the reason I am in this business.  They are solely responsible for me taking a cinematic approach to EMS and Paramedicine to improve the entertainment and educational value we have to offer as professionals in the industry.

There is nothing different here than what was made in the 90’s.  My question to you would be what would you change to show your industry?

    Ted,
First of all let me say thank you for bringing this series to my attention and especially for your vigilant perspective on how paramedics are being portrayed to the world.

I think you make some great points but I believe the Australian show has the potential to do way more good than harm.

1- Paramedics in Australia are the number one trusted profession for over ten years running. It’s as competitive to get into paramedic college as it is med school and this show maintains the message that paramedicine is an honorable profession.

2- The public has NO IDEA about our profession – people within healthcare don’t even understand what we do. The show gives some insight and of the two episodes I watched, sure it’s Hollywoodized but its still pretty accurate.

3- We need a professional foundation of incorporation, understanding and mutual respect from outside as well as within our profession. We can build from there all of the cool nuances of what our profession is capable of to help improve healthcare.

I grew up watching EMERGENCY! and it is not accurate in many ways but it got me thinking about paramedics. Isn’t that what is good about this series?

    Cheers,
    Matt
